How to use the area converter
Pick the unit you have and the unit you want, then type the size. The answer updates as you type, and the list below gives the same area in every unit, from square millimeters to square miles. The round button swaps the units. A sum such as 12×8 works too, which is handy for a room.
Examples: 1 acre is 43560 square feet, 5 acres is 217800 square feet, 1000 square feet is 92.9 square meters, 100 square meters is 1076.4 square feet and 1 hectare is 2.471 acres. For a rectangle, multiply the two sides first: a 20 by 30 foot room is 600 square feet, about 55.7 square meters.
A square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square meter, since a foot is 0.3048 meter (NIST). An acre is 43560 square feet, or about 4046.86 square meters. To convert acres to square feet you multiply by 43560. The area converter keeps every decimal.
Property listings, land and floor plans
In the US, homes are listed in square feet and land in acres, while most of the world uses square meters for floors and hectares for land. A hectare is 10000 square meters, or about 2.47 acres. A square mile holds 640 acres.
The list also carries traditional area units such as the arpent, the rai and the ngan, in case a deed or a listing uses one. Whatever the source, pick the unit it names and the area converter shows the same plot in acres, hectares and square feet side by side.
Mental shortcut: a square meter is about 10.76 square feet, so multiply by 11 for a rough floor area. For a listing, a loan or a tax form, use the area converter instead, and check which unit the document uses.
Area comes from length: if you only have a width and a depth, convert each with the feet to meters converter first, then multiply.
