How the gallons to liters converter gets the liters
Enter a number of gallons and the liters appear beside it. The page opens on 10 gallons, which the gallons to liters converter shows as 37.8541 liters. Further down, the same volume is repeated in quarts, pints, cups, cubic feet and milliliters, and the round button turns the conversion around. Sums work as well: type 3×5 for three 5-gallon water jugs and read 56.78 liters.
The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, and since an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, that makes it exactly 3.785411784 liters (NIST lists 3.785 412). To convert gallons to liters, multiply by that number; 3.785 is close enough for a quick estimate. A gallon holds 4 quarts, so a quart is 0.946 liter, which is why a liter bottle holds slightly more than a quart.

Fuel, water heaters and the imperial gallon
Fuel is priced by the gallon in the US and by the liter in Canada and Mexico. A 12-gallon tank takes 45.4 liters to fill and an 18-gallon one 68.1 liters. To compare pump prices, divide the price per gallon by 3.785: $3.50 a gallon works out to about $0.92 a liter, a step the gallons to liters converter cannot do for you since it handles volumes, not money.
Around the house, a 50-gallon water heater holds 189.3 liters, a 10-gallon aquarium 37.9 liters, and a 55-gallon drum, the size used for oil and for many rain barrels, 208.2 liters. When a treatment bottle doses per liter but the tank was sold in gallons, the gallons to liters converter gives the figure to dose against.
At the grocery store, milk comes in gallon and half-gallon jugs. A half gallon is 1.89 liters, a little less than a 2-liter soda bottle. A recipe for brine, stock or punch written for a gallon becomes 3.79 liters with the gallons to liters converter, easy to measure in a metric pitcher.
One trap: the UK uses the imperial gallon, 4.54609 liters, about 20 percent bigger than the US one, and British fuel economy in miles per gallon is counted in it. US gallons to liters and imperial gallons to liters are two different conversions, so the list carries both under their full names. Pick the one your source uses before the gallons to liters converter does the math.
For smaller amounts in the kitchen, the cups to ml converter is the better fit, and the ml to oz converter covers bottles and cans.
