How the cm to inches converter works

Type a length in centimeters and the inches show up at once, along with the same length in every other unit underneath. The round button swaps the units, so the same tool also converts inches to cm. You can type a sum too, such as 2×45 for two 45 cm boards, and read the total straight away.

The rule fits in one number: an inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. To go from centimeters to inches you divide by 2.54, and to go back you multiply. It is not a rounded figure: since the 1959 international agreement the inch has been defined as 25.4 millimeters, as NIST explains. The cm to inches converter keeps every decimal and only rounds for display.

Reading the result: decimals, fractions and height

Most tape measures sold in the US are marked in sixteenths of an inch, so a decimal like 3.937 is not much help in a workshop. Under the result, the cm to inches converter also shows the nearest fraction: 10 cm reads as about 3 15/16 inches, 1.27 cm as exactly 1/2 inch.

For a height, pick "Feet + Inch" in the list: 180 cm becomes 5 ft 10.9 in, and our height conversion chart lists every common height in both systems. For screen sizes and longer runs of values, the inches to cm chart covers TVs, monitors and phones.

Centimeters show up on most products made outside the US: European furniture, bike frames, clothing labels and luggage limits. A carry-on bag of 55 × 40 × 20 cm is about 21.7 × 15.7 × 7.9 inches, which is why airline size checks are worth doing in both units.
