How the kg to stone converter works
Type a weight in kilograms and the answer comes in two parts, whole stones and the pounds left over. The page opens on 70 kg: that is 154.32 lb, which makes 11 stones and about a third of a pound. The list underneath also shows the pounds alone and the decimal stone. Decimals work as typed: 72.5 kg reads 11 st 5.8 lb.
The chain of definitions is exact. A pound is 0.45359237 kg (NIST) and a stone is 14 of those pounds (Weights and Measures Act 1985), so a kilogram is about 2.20462 lb, or 0.157473 stone. The kg to stone converter divides by 6.35029318 and splits the result: 80 kg gives 12.598 st, shown as 12 st 8.4 lb.
Mind the decimal stone. A reading of 12.6 st is not 12 st 6 lb, because the decimal part is a fraction of 14 pounds: 0.6 st is 8.4 lb. That is why the kg to stone converter puts stones and pounds side by side instead of a single decimal.
Kilos to stone at the doctor, the gym and on holiday
Hospitals and GP surgeries in the UK work in kilograms, and so do many gym machines and smart scales once set to metric. Plenty of people in Britain still picture their body weight in stones: run a printout of 85 kg through the kg to stone converter and it reads 13 st 5.4 lb, while 60 kg is 9 st 6.3 lb. A weight-loss target of 5 kg, for instance, is 11 lb, a little under a stone.
Weighing yourself on holiday in Europe raises the same question, since scales there show kilograms. Type the reading into the converter as it appears, decimals included, and convert kilograms to stone in one step.
Mental shortcut: multiply the kilograms by 2.2 to get pounds, then take away 14 for each stone. 75 kg gives about 165 lb, which is 11 stones with 11 lb left, close to the exact 11 st 11.3 lb.
For a weight already in stones that you need in kilograms, use the stone to kg converter. For American pounds, the lbs to stone converter does the same split.
