Using the oz to ml converter, and the exact factor
Type an amount in US fluid ounces and the oz to ml converter shows the milliliters beside it, with liters, cups and the imperial ounce in the list below. The converter opens on 8 fl oz, or 236.59 ml to two decimals. Sums work too: 3×1.5 gives 133.08 ml for three shots.
A US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon of 231 cubic inches, which makes it exactly 29.5735295625 ml (NIST lists 29.573 53 mL). To go from fl oz to ml you multiply by that number. The oz to ml converter keeps every decimal, so 64 fl oz, a half gallon, comes to 1,892.71 ml.
US nutrition labels count a fluid ounce as 30 ml when they state a serving size. That rounded figure is fine for a label, but the oz to ml converter sticks to the exact one.
Carry-on liquids, cocktails and US labels
At US airports, the TSA limits carry-on liquids to containers of 3.4 ounces, its way of writing 100 ml. The oz to ml converter shows that 3.4 fl oz is 100.55 ml, and that a 2 oz travel bottle holds 59.15 ml, well under the limit.
Bar recipes from the US measure in ounces. A standard jigger pours 1.5 fl oz, or 44.36 ml, and its small side often holds 0.75 fl oz, 22.18 ml. Converting ounces to ml once lets you use a metric measure for the whole recipe.
For a British recipe, pick Imperial Fluid Ounce as the starting unit instead: 10 imperial fl oz, half a UK pint, is 284.13 ml.
In the kitchen, a fluid ounce is 2 US tablespoons, so 3 fl oz of stock, or 6 tablespoons, is 88.72 ml. Teaspoons come out at 4.93 ml each.
Bottles and cans sold in the US print fl oz, which the oz to ml converter reads in metric: a 20 fl oz soda bottle is 591.47 ml, a 1.7 fl oz perfume about 50 ml. British recipes and pint glasses use the smaller imperial ounce, and a UK pint holds 20 of them, 568.26 ml. To start from milliliters, use the ml to oz converter, and for recipes in cups, the cups to ml converter.
