MB to GB converter
This MB to GB converter turns megabytes into gigabytes as you type, so you can compare a file size, the storage of a phone or a monthly data allowance in the unit you need.
Formula: GB = MB ÷ 1,024 2,048 ÷ 1,024 = 2

How the MB to GB converter works
Type a value in megabytes and read the gigabytes next to it. The round button swaps the units to go from GB to MB, and the list below shows the same size in bytes, kilobytes, terabytes and bits. A sum such as 3×700 works too, handy to add up several files.
Examples: 256 MB is 0.25 GB, 1536 MB is 1.5 GB, 4096 MB is 4 GB and 10240 MB is 10 GB. Going the other way, multiply gigabytes by 1024, so 8 GB is 8192 MB. Decimals work as typed, and the MB to GB converter needs no rounding before you read the result.
Between two data units, each step is 1024, not 1000: 1024 MB make 1 GB. To convert MB to GB you divide by 1024, so 2048 MB is exactly 2 GB and 500 MB is about 0.49 GB. The MB to GB converter keeps every decimal. NIST calls this convention binary prefixes (mebi, gibi) and gives 1 MiB as 1 048 576 bytes. The MiB and GiB lines in the list show the same values.
Why a drive looks smaller than its label
Drive makers count 1 GB as 1000 MB, while many operating systems count in steps of 1024. A 1 TB drive holds 1 000 000 000 000 bytes, which a 1024 count displays as about 931 GB. Nothing is missing, the two sides just count differently. For the decimal figure, divide by 1000 instead of 1024.
When you convert megabytes to gigabytes, do not mix bytes and bits either. A byte is 8 bits, MB with a capital B is megabytes and Mb is megabits. Both appear in the list, so a figure of 100 megabits reads as 12.5 MB, the size you will see in a download window.
Mental shortcut: 1000 MB is about 0.98 GB, so for a rough size you can divide megabytes by 1000. For a quota or a download you need to be exact about, use the MB to GB converter. It follows the 1024 convention, the one used for memory and for most file managers.
The Computer category of the conversion calculator goes further, with kilobytes, petabytes and the bit units, if you need to move between megabytes to gigabytes and everything around them.
