How the ounces to grams converter works

Type a weight in ounces and the ounces to grams converter shows the grams beside it. The page opens on 8 oz, which is 226.8 g, the size of a standard US block of cream cheese. The list underneath adds pounds, kilograms and the troy ounce, and a sum such as 2×6 adds two 6 oz packs before converting them.

The ounce used in kitchens and shops is the avoirdupois ounce, one sixteenth of a pound, so exactly 28.349523125 grams (NIST). To convert oz to grams in your head, multiply by 28.35, or by 30 for a rough figure that runs about 6 percent high. The ounces to grams converter keeps all nine decimals, so 16 oz comes to 453.59 g, one pound to the hundredth of a gram.

Recipes, cans and gold: where ounces turn up

American recipes often weigh cheese, chocolate and meat in ounces. A US stick of butter is 4 oz, or 113.4 g, and a 12 oz bag of chocolate chips holds 340.19 g. Run them through the ounces to grams converter and a metric kitchen scale does the rest. British recipes that still give ounces use the same avoirdupois ounce, so nothing changes for them. Flour and sugar measured by the cup are covered in our cups to grams conversion.

Cans and jars carry both units, but recipes tend to quote only the ounces, so you convert oz to grams yourself: a 15 oz can of beans is 425.24 g, a 6 oz steak 170.1 g. Liquids are another story, since the fluid ounce measures volume. A cup of milk belongs in the cups to ml converter, not on a scale.

Postage is priced by the ounce in the US, and a First-Class Mail letter can weigh up to 3.5 oz, which is 99.22 g on a metric scale. For a parcel marked in pounds and ounces, such as 1 lb 4 oz, pick Pound + Ounce as the starting unit and read 566.99 g.

Precious metals use yet another ounce. Gold and silver prices are quoted per troy ounce of 31.1034768 g, almost 10 percent heavier than the kitchen one, and the list shows it on a separate line. To start from a metric scale reading instead, open the grams to ounces converter.
