How the inches to feet converter divides by 12
Type the inches and the decimal feet show up next to them: 70 in is 5.8333… ft, a repeating decimal that the page only rounds for display. Further down, the "Feet + Inch" row reads 5 ft 10 in, next to yards, centimeters and meters. The round button goes to the feet to inches converter for the opposite direction.
A foot is 12 inches by definition, and both units are tied to the meter, since the inch is defined as 2.54 cm (NIST). To convert inches to feet you divide by 12; the remainder of that division gives the leftover inches if you prefer feet and inches. 70 ÷ 12 = 5, remainder 10, hence 5 ft 10 in. Fractions of an inch carry through: 70.5 in is 5.875 ft.

Turning inches into feet for floors, rugs and lumber
Square footage is the main reason to work in decimal feet. Measure a rug at 30 by 54 inches and the inches to feet converter gives 2.5 by 4.5 ft, which multiply to 11.25 square feet. Multiply in inches first and you get 1,620 square inches, which still need dividing by 144. For a metric floor, our area converter then gives the same rug in square meters.
Trim, molding and fabric are priced by the foot, while a cut list is written in inches. Type the pieces into the inches to feet converter as a sum, for example 42+42+18+18 for a frame, and read 10 ft before you buy. Mind the lumber names, though: a 2×4 is sold under that name but measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches.
Furniture specs are another case. A sofa listed at 84 inches is 7 ft long, and a 36-inch doorway leaves 3 ft to carry it through, so the inches to feet converter helps plan a move before the truck arrives.
For a height, read the feet and inches line: a child at 48 inches is 4 ft even, an adult at 66 inches is 5 ft 6 in. A ceiling of 96 inches is the familiar 8-foot ceiling, and a 108-inch one is 9 ft. When a spec sheet gives inches and you think in feet, the inches to feet converter saves the long division.
